National Daiquiri Day – 19th of July

Every year on July 19th, National Daiquiri Day is celebrated – a great occasion to spotlight this iconic drink, its history, and its many flavour variations. And of course, to shine a light on rum – the key ingredient that defines the character of the cocktail.

A history that began by chance – and lasted forever

The Daiquiri was created in 1898 in Cuba, near a small village named Daiquirí. American engineer Jennings Cox was looking for a way to cool off in the tropical heat. He mixed white rum, lime juice, and sugar, served it over ice – and thus, a classic drink was born.

The cocktail quickly crossed the seas when a U.S. Navy Admiral brought it to Washington, where it became popular among high society. Later, it became a favourite of Ernest Hemingway in Havana. At the El Floridita bar, he ordered his own special version – no sugar, with grapefruit juice, and double the strength. This version became known as the “Hemingway Daiquiri” or Papa Doble.
